AN ADAGE A DAY â—½ HOME

Here’s a fun old saying. And I bet every woman who reads this will raise their hand and claim ownership. We all could! I’m sure it’s true in each of our homes! So what is the saying that’s true in each of our homes?

“It’s never a dull moment!”

And being the start of April, with spring going into summer, and the school year ending, that will be what we’re all saying. It can be said about most things in our lives that it’s never a dull moment. And I don’t know about you, but I prefer it that way. And God has blessed us with the perfect place for all those moments.

One of my favorite moments in time was right after my son graduated from college and got married. Of course, both of those events are favorite memories, but there’s another that I remember very fondly. He had taken a job as a youth minister at a small church in the southern  Dallas/Fort Worth area. This church did not have the finances to send their kids to a youth church camp so my son asked if he could host the kids for a camp here, at our house. What? We had lots of parties with lots of kids, but they all went home afterwards. This camp would be five days AND four nights. I thought it through and decided it was doable. There were only 20 youths and adults, so I started to think of ideas to make every moment count. We put the girls on one end of the house with the boys on the other. My husband and I camped in the bedroom in the middle.

My son and his wife were going to do all the activities and Bible studies. I was to do all the meals and I had to add a few fun extras, like inflatable bumper boats in the swimming pool.

It was the most blessed five days of working and getting to know a great group of kids and adults. And an extra blessing was watching my son and his new wife work together and interact with the kids. We all stayed so busy making every minute count and there was never a dull moment! When it was over, my husband and I stood in the driveway and waved goodbye until they were all out of sight. Then we sat down, exhausted, for what seemed like forever. It was worth every minute! And if I had it to do over, I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

The phrase “never a dull moment” means to always have something happening, something going on, and it began in the late 1880’s. And it’s unsure who said it first.

The quote, “a moment in time” refers to a certain point or specific memory. It’s been around for a long time and interesting to note that this quote is used in Luke 4:5 when Satan tempts Jesus by showing Him “all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.”

Putting these all together, I can honestly say, there was a moment in time when we never had a dull moment. And now, as empty nesters, we wait for the kids to come home to visit, even if only for a minute, and just like before, we try to make every minute count.

It’s like the quote from Dr. Suess,

“Sometimes you will never know the value of something, until it becomes a memory.”

So, for every memory of everyday past and each minute of every day now and from this moment on, I will keep in mind, Psalm 118:24,

“This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
