I tried cauliflower steak with crispy chickpeas underneath, and chimichurri on top and loved it!  Have you had cauliflower steak?

Frank Lloyd Wright, the famous architect, built houses with low ceilings at the entry and higher ones behind, so that guests would be uncomfortable by the door and move on in, to gather.  Cool!

We also learned that one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s sons invented Lincoln Logs. I looked it up.  It’s true.

I love sharing things I’ve learned, because if we don’t share, what’s the use in learning?  And I’d love to hear what you’ve learned as well.  So feel free to comment as you read my list each month, and I’ll add your comment to the next month’s story!

Here’s what I learned last month:

There are people that sponge dive! If you live in Florida, you probably knew that.  But I didn’t.  How fascinating. Look it up and watch a video!

There are still those that roll cigars for a living and you can watch them through the window in many shops in Ybor City in Tampa, Florida.  Again, fascinating!

Did you know that back 100 years ago, homes often had three irons for ironing?   A different iron for different fabrics!

Have you tasted a pineberry?  We saw them in a store, and they’re berries that look like strawberries, except they’re white and taste like a pineapple!

You know the leotards gymnasts and girls everywhere wear?  They were started with a circus acrobatic performer, Jules Leotard. Before the 1960’s, leotards were worn mainly by these circus performers.  It was after that, that the rest of society began to wear them.

One of the kids’ sports teams is called the Warhawks.  12 year old Gideon thought it was just a name until he looked it up – it’s a real bird – who knew?

You don’t HAVE to cook every time you throw a party or have folks over.  Pre-made snacks arranged on cute trays works…and you’re not stressed! (I’m still learning this…)  And Trader Joe’s is the place to go!

Try mashed avocado with lime and diced onion as a spread on your sandwich instead of mustard and/or mayo – it’s good!

The BBQ & Black Pepper Toscano prepared salad from Trader Joe’s is SO GOOD for a quick lunch to go – we just added avocado and sliced cucumbers, and we both loved the salad!

And in addition to that, did you know that Trader Joe’s sells tiny tomatoes and tiny avocados?  They’re great for lunches to go!

Do you know what a Tabby House is?  We didn’t either, until on a home tour we learned that it’s when the house walls are made of oyster shells, lime, sand and water.

Speaking of shells, we found a lot in the sand by the river in a small town recently.  Maybe I haven’t ever noticed before, but shells by a river?  I was surprised!

Finally, this past month we were eating pico de gallo at a restaurant.  My husband noted that he thought that meant little pieces of rooster…which yeck…what?  I looked up its origin, and it was thought that pico de gallo, in its early creation, was eaten by pinching the thumb and fingers…like the beak of a rooster!
