THYME BOOKSTORE ◽ TIPS

Our feature this month is a book I wrote just after my mom passed…about her life in a role she never wanted. Her dad was a circuit-riding preacher back in the early 1900’s and he was ridiculed, persecuted, and he suffered from depression…all of which made my mom swear she’d never marry a preacher.
When she married my dad, he was a policeman, and in a few years felt the “call” and became a preacher, much to my mom’s dismay. She often voiced this disappointment to me over the years, and sometimes made remarks about living the life she did not desire to live. Yet, there she was, and there she lived…for decades and decades, while my dad pastored the same church.
I thought about my mom’s stories she told and about her own fears and misgivings as the wife of a preacher, a much misunderstood role for sure. And so…a lot of this story is mixed with memories she shared, but it’s also a lot of fiction, too.
I think this book is for the woman who finds herself not living her dream at all, but rather living the life she never asked for, and especially one she never longed for. How does it happen like that, sometimes?
Maybe you’re a mom with a chronically ill child, so motherhood is not what you’d dreamed of. Or perhaps the expectations placed on you in your family are too heavy to carry and you can’t believe you’re in the middle of a heavy life, one you can barely bear. It could be that you too thought you had a great life until something changed, and all is different now, and you’re devastated.
I observed my mom, her bitterness that often came out in sarcastic remarks. I even listened to some of her woes, and I knew all of my life that she had been so upset at the hand she had been dealt…after she married my dad. And yet, a story emerged – one of hope and cool insight – as I thought and wrote.
It’s an easy read, and one that will encourage you. You’ll probably find yourself in the story…somewhere. Or maybe you’ll want to give the book to a friend.
