IN EACH ROOM â—½ HOME
HOME - may 2025 - in each room1.jpg

My patio was weather beaten, linens and cushions were dirty and pecked at by squirrels, and they didn’t speak “spring/summer” at all.  So off I went, with a vision and a plan, and spruced up the area, as well as redid my herb garden.  Made me happy.  Hope it will inspire you this month!

New cushions really brighten up a space, and colorful ones make the outdoor area come alive!  I opted for turquoise and terra cotta, with splashes of bright red.  I already had some floral pillows on a bench so I chose to pull out some of those hues for cushion colors.  I found just what I needed at the store At Home.

A tablecloth is something I enjoy using on my patio table.  I opt for fabric instead of plastic, because I can find very affordable options on Amazon, like this one.  It sort of pulls together all of the colors against the backdrop of the tie back curtain on one corner of the porch.  That’s from World Market and has been a staple for years, I just change it out as needed.

A big five-wick candle is new, it’s from Pop Shelf, a fun small store where I like to find cute things – at affordable prices.  It’s fun to light a candle when sitting on the patio, to keep the bugs away, and to create ambience.

As for my herb garden, we tore down the wonderful wooden herb box that my husband built years ago, because it had seen its last days.  I had seen inspiration on line of cute herb gardens in pots, so I decided make my own.

First, we had some old bricks I used to place underneath the three vessels I found at Target to house my new herb arrangement – two different sized large tall pots, and one black metal tray type container on a stand (all had drainage holes – important!) A group of three sounded just right to me!

After adding soil and herbs like basil, oregano, thyme, lemon balm and parsley, I step backed and was pleased.  I had a red metal flower somewhere else in the yard and moved it to sit right behind the pots and that completed the look.

Now, after just a few short weeks, everything is up and growing and green!  And it really didn’t take much time at all to put together…this pretty view from the patio.

It can be costly to refresh any space, so here are a few pointers:

  • Have a vision for what you want before you start and shop your home, first.  See what you have that you can use as a start, and go from there.

  • Have a list of what you’d like to change or add to your outdoor space and your budget in mind of what you can spend.

  • Have a plan to get a few items as you can, and start with your main color scheme and add from there.

  • Have a look around again in your garage and in your home for accents and use them, as they might just be the perfect touch!
