We finally sold my parents’ house to my kids! They are creating an Airbnb, and we couldn’t be more excited. In going through the house one more time, I saw this beautiful trifle dish that no one had taken, so I grabbed it. Knowing I would probably never make the actual trifle layered dish to serve, I had seen on line where a pretty planter could be designed very easily, and so I tried it! This one little dish adds so much to the dining table…but I could move it to any space at all…and love it just as much!
Items needed:

A trifle dish (or similar glass bowl)

Moss and rocks

An air plant

A mister
You can visit a local nursery and there find the moss and rocks needed for the base of the bowl. Just pick out a color scheme of rocks that match your décor. I opted for a bag that included lots of gray. There were also air plants to choose from. Some were taller and slender, and others were more spread out. Just consider the size of your bowl and choose accordingly.
The assembly is so simple. Just place the rocks and the moss in the base of the bowl, up as high as you think necessary in order to then place the air plant, so that it can be seen atop the bowl when it’s set. Finally, nestle in the air plant so that it sits up straight.
I did read about air plants and their care, but do read about the specific one you choose – where to place it and how much water it needs. They really need such little care at all.
Finally, I wanted to purchase a pretty mister to water the plant, and I found the cutest one at Target for $7.
When placing your creation in your home, just think about where you want to sit your pretty bowl, now turned planter. I chose my dining table, and placed a pretty mat underneath – one I got at a Frank Wright museum on a vacation! It’s often good to decorate in groups of three, so I added a slender vase, with a bit of trailing (faux) plant over the side…and then the mister nearby.
The table where I placed my creation gets indirect light from the windows nearby, and it seems to be enough. Having the mister right next to the bowl reminds me to spray it once a week. And supposedly, this little air plant does bloom…so I’m waiting for that.
It doesn’t take much to brighten up a space in any room in your house. So if you’ve got a pretty glass bowl, go for it. Or shop a vintage store and look for a trifle dish. Then fill and arrange and set.
One of the easiest “crafts” to put together and one of the prettiest…I think.
