IN UNISONâ—˝ MARRIAGE

God promises that marriage flourishes through hope, not passive hope.
As I explored both ideas, I gained a deeper understanding that revealed truths in my own marriage—and perhaps in yours as well.
Passive hope in marriage creates unrealistic cultural expectations of perfection.
It promises the illusion of constant bliss—that a spouse will meet every emotional need.
When real life brings pressure, conflict, fatigue, and stress, a relationship built on passive hope begins to feel fatigued.
The disillusionment in passive hope can cause a marriage to become insincere.
Passive hope listens to a marriage podcast and expects it to transform the relationship without active engagement.
It is empty because it is not formed without faith-based action.
It can feel nice telling our spouse what to do so he or she may show up better.
Warning! It stays locked into the same cycle dynamic.
Passive hope leaves marriage stuck and going nowhere.
It’s wishful thinking at its core.
Hope gives marriage strength, realism, and resilience.
It is rooted in a mature understanding that a spouse cannot meet every emotional need.
Hope chooses loving effort and steady commitment through the highs & the lows.
Hope’s fulfillment draws a marriage forward with sincerity and mutual movement.
When disconnection occurs, hope responds with patience and trust.
It is grounded in what is real.
Hope is intentional, trusting God’s purpose for the special relationship.
It is not rushed; its reward is full and shaped by divine design.
It practices self-control and believes God will flourish their union.
Hope being fruitful is flexible because grace is the key that unlocks it.
It is free, responsive, and able to move wherever it goes.
It’s prayerful thinking at its core.
Isn’t hope what every marriage longs for?
In my marriage, the difference lies in striving in our own strength or resting in grace.
At its best, hope strengthens Chris and me with daily joy and renewed fulfilled purpose.
No one truly wants to settle for passive hope; it is a harsh master and a thief.
Though the choice can be difficult, intentionality and awareness open the gate to hope.
