We needed to get away, just for a couple of days, and found this airbnb in Copperas Cove, literally just an hour away. Honestly, the curb appeal was lacking...but the inside was pristine. It was clean, so cute, and had everything we needed.
We drove to Gatesville first to visit my husband's brother, and enjoyed an old-fashioned burger at a dive called Burger Boy - so good!
We checked in at 2pm and just relaxed in the house, and watched the deer arrive (every morning and evening that weekend) to drink from a big pot in front of the place. The place was atop one of the five hills in an older neighborhood, and had a nice deck out back, as well. The large TV was great, as was the kitchen - fully stocked - to make our meals. We were tired, so we stayed and enjoyed the cabin the rest of the evening. It's so fun cooking in another kitchen!
The next morning we packed a picnic (bean and corn salsa, with chicken salad - and chips) to head to Colorado Bend State Park but they were full! It wasn't far down the road to San Saba where we found their nature river park - a real treasure! We ate our picnic, then walked the beautiful trail. It's worth the drive just walk this trail - lined with gorgeous trees, a river with waterfalls, a bird theater, lots of metal animal art, etc. as well as the history of different stops along the way. Across the street was the mill pond, so pretty for visiting or even swimming.
We headed into town (it was Sunday and most things were closed) and found Alamo Pecan Store open - did you know San Saba is the pecan capital of the nation? So they say... But we did find some delicious goodies to take home.
Another option out in that area is Topsey drive-thru safari if you have the time!
We had purchased tickets for the Copperas Cove Cinergy theater - one of those large theaters with food, arcades, bowling, etc. It's a super nice - recently remodeled - theater. We saw the new Liam Neesom movie in the new theater and loved it.
Back to our house for the evening for another fun evening, watching the deer arrive, playing Yahtzee (take two sets of dice - it's more fun that way to each have your own set!) and doing puzzles, and reading.
We had to leave early the next morning to get back to work, but Five Hills airbnb was a nice getaway with top reviews from me (except the outside - needs some plants!) That area has several towns to drive to, check out and enjoy - as well as parks and little shops and eateries. We could have done so much more, but we only had a couple of days this time...
